In recent years, with the application of highly hydrophobic fibers such as chemical fibers and inorganic fibers in the paper industry, higher requirements have been placed on the dispersants used, which require strong wetting and permeability, high adsorption properties, and the ability to reduce solution surface tension. The continuous application of dispersants and additives in the papermaking industry.

The influence of dispersant addition on other processes is increasingly attracting people's attention. Previous experiments have shown that the application of dispersants in papermaking has significant energy-saving effects, especially in reducing the power consumption of pulping. Adding dispersants during the papermaking process and using a mild beating process can not only improve product quality but also have significant energy-saving effects. In addition, after adding a colloidal solution formed by a dispersant during the papermaking process, its fine particles are distributed among the fibers of the pulp, slowing down fiber flocculation and settling, and evenly distributing the fibers in water, greatly improving the uniformity of the pulp on the web. This allows for the production of thinner high-quality paper with lower beating degree and longer fibers, and creates conditions for increasing the speed of the paper machine. At the same time, the decrease in beating degree reduces the adsorption force between water and fibers, accelerates the filtration speed of the slurry, and can appropriately increase the concentration of the slurry in the mesh tank, thereby reducing the amount of clean water used in the mesh box, reducing the loss of small fibers, and lowering power consumption and slurry consumption. At the same time, due to the improvement of water filtration performance, the dewatering performance of the web and press parts of the paper machine has been enhanced, thereby further improving the production capacity of the paper machine.

In short, although the application of dispersants in the papermaking industry is relatively common abroad, it is still in its infancy in China. Its application is limited to some common dispersants such as polyethylene oxide and polyacrylamide, and some mechanisms of action still need to be supplemented and improved. Its impact on other aspects of papermaking production also needs to be studied and demonstrated. However, it is an undeniable fact that the addition of dispersants significantly improves the uniformity of paper sheets.
