Acrylic leveling agents are commonly used in the formulation of primers and intermediate paints. If degassing performance and substrate wettability are required, medium or high molecular weight acrylic leveling agents should be selected. In primer, if stronger substrate wettability is required, organic silicon leveling agents and modified acrylic leveling agents that can significantly reduce surface tension (such as fluorine modified acrylic leveling agents and phosphate modified acrylic leveling agents) can be considered. If organosilicon leveling agent and fluorine modified acrylic leveling agent have side effects such as foam stability, which affect the adhesion between layers, phosphate modified acrylic leveling agent shall be used.

In the formulation of topcoat and transparent paint, the appearance requirements of the paint film are relatively high. Generally speaking, low molecular weight acrylic leveling agents can be chosen, which will achieve good leveling performance and are not prone to fogging in the paint film. In cross-linking curing systems, acrylic leveling agents containing reactive functional groups are often selected to achieve better leveling performance and improve the physical and chemical properties of the paint film. If the paint film needs better fluidity, smoothness, and scratch resistance, organic silicon leveling agents are necessary. In this case, it is best to use a combination of silicone leveling agent and acrylic leveling agent.

It should be pointed out that silicone leveling agents can effectively reduce the sagging trend of coatings while providing leveling performance during vertical construction. In addition, caution should be exercised when using silicone leveling agents in the preparation of metallic glitter paint, as uneven arrangement of flake aluminum pigments may result in uneven paint film color.
