Application Guide for Leveling and Wetting Agents

Different types of matrix wetting agents have different application effects. When using, carefully select the type, amount, and matching with other additives of the base wetting agent based on the coating type and coating material.

1. The difference between substrate wetting agent and leveling agent

Matrix wetting agents have the effect of promoting flow and leveling, but they are different from leveling agents. It functions at the interface between the coating and the substrate, reducing the interfacial tension between solid and liquid, and does not affect the interlayer adhesion of the coating. However, leveling agents act on the surface of the coating and are active agents used to eliminate surface defects and control the surface state. Although some varieties have the effect of promoting flow and leveling, some varieties can affect interlayer adhesion.

2. Application of Base Wetting Agent on Low Surface Energy Materials

When coating on low surface energy materials, it is best to add a base wetting agent to the coating. It can improve the wetting and spreading properties of the coating on the substrate, and enhance the smoothness of the coating surface. It can prevent shrinkage cavities, edge shrinkage, and other unwanted phenomena caused by the low surface tension of the substrate. And it can also improve the adhesion of the coating. In topcoats, especially water-based coatings, it is best to use a combination of base wetting agents and leveling agents. This can simultaneously control the upper and lower surfaces of the coating, improve the leveling of the coating, and control the surface state of the coating.
