This is currently the most widely used and important type of leveling agent. It has been widely known for its application in the paint industry for nearly a hundred years. However, in the past, low viscosity silicone oil was used mainly for defoaming, preventing swelling of the pot when boiling resin, and preventing paint discoloration. In recent years, due to the emergence of modified polydimethylsiloxane, silicone oil is at risk of being phased out.

There are many varieties of modified polydimethylsiloxane, which are widely used. Alkyl and aryl modified polydimethylsiloxane: polyether and polyester modified polydimethylsiloxane. Among them, polyether modification is the most common and widely used, with the reputation of being a versatile additive. The main modification method is to control the ratio of silicon oxygen segments to modified segments and adjust their properties. Comb shaped side chain modification, end group modification, and simultaneous modification of side chain end groups. Modified compounds include polyoxyethylene and polyoxypropyl compounds, with ethoxy being hydrophilic and propoxy being oleophilic.

Polydimethylsiloxane has different molecular weights and uses, with viscosity ranging from 5-50mPa&Middot; S belongs to low viscosity silicone oil with good solubility, which can prevent foaming; 100-300mPa&Middot; S viscosity silicone oil can be used as a leveling agent to prevent foaming and as a lubricant; 5000-50000mPa&Middot; S silicone oil can be used as a defoamer; Viscosity 100000-30000mPa&Middot; S can be used as a hammering agent.
