Testing of water sensitivity of dispersants

Dispersant is an interfacial active agent that possesses both lipophilic and hydrophilic properties within a molecule. It can uniformly disperse solid particles of inorganic and organic pigments that are difficult to dissolve in liquids, while also preventing the settling and aggregation of solid particles, forming the required agents for stable suspensions. So dispersants require certain conditional factors in water, otherwise the influence of water quality on dispersants also exists.

分散剂对水敏感的检验

The sensitivity of dispersants to water can be tested using a simple method: dry the dispersant at 50-70 ℃, and then test its solubility with water. The results show three situations: solubility, turbidity, and insolubility, representing water solubility, hydrophilicity, and hydrophobicity, respectively. Select appropriate water sensitive dispersants based on the water resistance requirements of the coating.

The compatibility of dispersants in coating components is an important application performance. In addition to the acceptance of colorants by the base coating, the impact on the thickening system should also be considered. It has been confirmed that the high electrolyte concentration of dispersants is detrimental to the thickening process and coating gloss. Hydrophilic or hydrophobic polymer dispersants are beneficial for enhancing and stabilizing the thickening system, and improving the gloss of coatings. Regarding the combination of dispersants with other additives, please contact the technical manager of Houhuan Chemical. Additionally, hydrophilic acrylic copolymer dispersants and hydrophobic copolymer dispersants do not require wetting agents to be used in combination!
